Through the diverse characters I’ve voiced, I’ve loved seeing the game industry strive to be more inclusive. As an African American Voice Actor for video games, I deeply understand the significance of representation, not just for visibility and expanded opportunities for talent sometimes overlooked, but also for enriching stories with authentic voices and experiences.

I know I personally get excited seeing and hearing Black Female Video Game Characters in games, which used to be too rare.

The gaming community thrives when players encounter diverse narratives that resonate with their own lives.

Sometimes casting can be rigid when it comes to who is considered for a video game voiceover role.

Many actors with chameleon qualities can also bring characters to life in unexpected ways through video game voiceover when given the opportunity to try out for roles they would not normally be considered for.

Nuanced video game voiceover performances can turn a pivotal scene into an unforgettable moment, or turn a cool visual character into an iconic and quotable one, imprinting the story in the player’s memory long after the game is over. The gaming community is diverse in age and culture, and constantly growing with each generation of new gamers, and video game voiceover should reflect that community.

Beyond consoles or computers, gaming on smartphones and tablets makes daily gameplay seamless, and as a voice actor, I get to call hours of gameplay “job research”. #ilovemyjob

I’ve developed a true appreciation for so many game genres through video game voiceover.

Like Hidden Object Games (HOPA)… The suspense… The problem-solving… The characters you can’t quite trust… I love it all!

Action-based games (RPG, MMORPG FPS, MOBA) are fun to battle in as the hero or the villain, and I have a warm place in my heart for a good villain! Whether yelling battle cries or softly casting spells, I’m all in for the challenge of action-packed quests, fierce battles, and gloating when ultimately defeating all of my enemies. 

Then there’s the comforting feeling of playing Cozy Games, offering a much-needed break from fast-paced and stressful days, transporting me to charmingly scenic worlds. Playing and voicing characters, sometimes expressing themselves without actual words, give me a cute meets chill feeling.

I also love that my voice is much more athletic than I am in real life, and I’ve had fun adding my voice to a few sports-themed games. Through the power of voice acting I can be the greatest trick shot point guard leading my team to an easy victory! Victory dance included!

I love Educational Games that make learning engaging and can even make homework fun.

I love Match 3 games and the excitement of Casino Games and vocally cheering players on.

And of course, the ultimate thrill is getting a chance to play a superhero – or rather, she-ro!

But even NPCs have recently been getting the love they deserve, so why not keep using real actors to voice them? NPC voice actors are the unsung heroes of quotable game lines.

There’s no such thing as a character too small in the gaming world!

I’ve also provided English dubbing for video games, not just as a voice match for the original language, but to include American nuances to connect with a new audience.

I know that AI offers convenience for some creators, and computer-generated voices in games are nothing new. but it often lacks the nuanced and genuine feel that only a human performance can provide. Formulaic or Robotic AI performances may be good placeholders but can be very offputting in the final project, or limiting as far as how unique a performance can be. We all know the same overly familiar AI voices when we hear them and that kind of voice will more likely make listeners zone out when the goal is for them to keep plugging in. Why settle for good enough when you can create something unique and memorable?
